Rotary Club of Livermore to Host the D5170 Regional Speech Contest

By

The Rotary Club of Livermore is pleased to be hosting the semi-finalists in the District-Wide Richard D King Speech Contest. This is the first time our Club has sponsored this event, and it should be very exciting.
The contest will be held April 2 at the Robert Livermore Community Center, 4444 East Avenue at noon. Four students will make their speeches and, if it is anything like last year, they will be spectacular!

T
he photo on the left is our Club's 2016 winner, Rachel Sylwester, with Past RI President Richard D King, when she won the District final. Her speech was centered on the RI theme "Be a Gift to the World". Rachel's mother had died suddenly in 2011 and her speech wove the story of her life with her mother and how she encouraged her to make a difference in the world. Her mother, Laura Gilliom, had been a member of our club. The story she shared wove the tenets of the four-way test and the RI theme into one of the most heartfelt speeches ever.

Rachel has continued to be a gift to the world and in 2020, as an undergraduate at Princeton, received the Leonard D. Schaeffer Fellowship based on her academic strength, campus involvement, and interest in public service.

Alan Frank Initiates Freight Room Renovation at Historic Livermore Train Depot

By Sunday, January 18, 2026

Livermore, CA — The Rotary Club of Livermore is proud to announce the renovation of the historic freight room at the Livermore Train Depot, a project that will transform the space into a fully equipped community conference room.

Originally built in 1892 by the Central Pacific Railroad, the Livermore Depot was relocated to the ACE Train Station in 2018. While the depot’s exterior was historically restored, its interior space remained unfinished — until now.

Under the leadership of Alan Frank, the Rotary Club of Livermore launched the Freight Room Renovation Project in partnership with the City of Livermore, the Livermore Heritage Guild, Rotary District 5170, Rotary Club of Livermore Valley and the Rotarian Foundation of Livermore (RFL).

Project funding supports the installation of a bathroom, kitchenette, air conditioning, audiovisual equipment, and tables and chairs, creating a comfortable, functional space for meetings, workshops, and community gatherings. Current funding has reached approximately $120,000.

In recognition of Alan Frank’s outstanding leadership and service to the community, the City of Livermore has agreed to name the space the Alan Frank Community Room. Completion of the renovation is expected in Spring 2027.

Rotarian Marc Roberts serves as project lead, coordinating efforts among Rotary members, city officials, and community partners to bring this historic restoration to life. The photo below shows the kitchenette area currently under construction with the new bathroom in the background.
